It’s that time of year again! Time to start work on the key annual event for TV France International, the Rendez-Vous in September in Biarritz.
This year, we are continuing our work to digitize the event with this brand-new site to communicate with TV France International members and with the guests we will welcome from around the world.
All communication will go through this site, which we hope will be both user-friendly and exhaustive in terms of information.
Hervé Michel President of TV France International
Time flies … Here we are, together again, and I am delighted to welcome you to this edition of Le Rendez-Vous.
The whole team at TV France International has been working hard to create a convivial event in this lovely seaside town, and to put together the line-up of French programs which our sales companies are proud to present to you. The quality of programming on offer and its suitability for the shifting digital market responds to global demand that is ever-more sophisticated thanks to the many modes of diffusion.
This 24th edition bears the stamp of sustainable development. Like other markets, we no longer publish a printed guide. All information is now only available in digital version. We are aware of the risk of upsetting those in the habit of using Post-its and notes scribbled on the margins of a catalog, but this is our contribution to the effort to reduce paper consumption. It has, however, been designed to allow you to print the pages you are interested in ahead of Le Rendez-Vous.
In terms of meals, we have asked our catering contractor to give priority to local produce, to recycle glass, and cut down on waste – none of which will pose a problem, since the company already has an eco-responsible label. As does the town of Biarritz, which means our closing-night gala will be held under the banner of eco-responsibility, in a venue designed and dedicated to that function.
The guiding principle of this gathering is to facilitate your work, through the Screenopsis search and screening tool. We have ensured that it offers all the features to allow you to access programs in an intuitive and rapid manner.
Our meeting space has been redesigned for greater conviviality and efficiency. As for entertainment, our line-up of evening events and screenings has a few surprises in store.
In recent years, the general trend for French program exports has been upward, as demonstrated by activity at Le Rendez-Vous. After record sales figures in 2016, we expect to see a new record, a result of the quality, inventiveness, and creativity of our producers. This is in part due to the loyalty that you, the buyers we welcome here, have shown in us.
It is also thanks to our sponsors; the CNC, which has introduced a raft of measures to support the export sector, the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs, and the Procirep; and our partners who allow TV France International to assist the efforts of its exporter members.
The town of Biarritz and its mayor, Michel Veunac, welcome us with enthusiasm and kindness. As a result, our guests thank them and return with their families during the year (we have bumped into a few!) to relive some of the good times of Le Rendez-Vous.
The TV France International team and I wish you an excellent 2018 Rendez-Vous.
President of TV France International
Frédérique Bredin President of the CNC
In a fast-changing television market, export has become a necessity. The advent of digital platforms and the emergence of new territories provide an opportunity to put the spotlight on French creativity worldwide.
We are continuing to implement reforms of the export market, and already, overall TV production is increasing its sales in international marketplaces, driven by animation. This movement should be accentuated with the reforms that we have recently put in place.
Since 1 January, we have proposed aid for co-writing drama coproductions to help transnational writing teams with a French element. We have also launched consultations on our plan for creative series, with the aim of diversifying formats, promoting collective writing, and bolstering the international potential of works.
Both those in the industry and public institutions should be guided by an urge to look ahead and be ambitious. I would like to pay tribute to the team at TV France International, who allow our production to better circulate, and to salute the wider work undertaken by French sales companies throughout the year in promoting French creativity worldwide.
I wish you all an excellent Rendez-Vous!
President of the CNC
Augustin Favereau Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs
At the crossroads of economic and cultural diplomacy, and at the heart of digital technology, promoting French cultural and creative industries (CCI) is one of the priorities of our international cultural action. CCIs are not only a key sector in the French economy (620,000 jobs and a turnover of €44.5 billion) but they also play a major political role by widely disseminating French creation and culture. To take on this dual challenge, the Minister has appointed Mr Jean-Noël Tronc, the CEO of SACEM (French Society of Authors, Composers and Publishers of Music), as export coordinator for CCIs, which are a priority sector for France. Within this framework, all stakeholders, both public and private, in the sector will be called upon to strengthen and increase the presence of French CCIs on international markets, with the support of the French cultural network abroad.
France has recognized expertise in this sector, which is sought by many countries. In the field of imaging, major technological changes are diversifying consumption patterns and fragmenting audience ratings. New strategies must be set out to meet these challenges and attract new audiences, particularly in Africa and Europe, which are priority areas for our diplomacy.
Now more than ever, the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs welcomes the role played by TV France International in this area to support professionals and the efforts made by the association to improve the tools it places at their disposal.
I am, however, convinced that in this era of digital technology and online communication, we must continue to prioritize human interaction, which like at Le Rendez-Vous in Biarritz in particular, helps build trusting relationships between exporters and international buyers.
So let us wish this 2018 edition of Le Rendez-Vous every success!
Head of the Culture and Media Department
Directorate-General for Global Affairs, Culture, Education and International Development
Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs
Caroline Roussel President of the Procirep Television Commission
As a loyal supporter of TV France International for many years, the Procirep is delighted to observe the vitality of its flagship event, Le Rendez-Vous in Biarritz.
This gathering has established itself as a key date for the promotion of French television programs. It allows producers and distributors to be in direct contact with international buyers over the space of several days in a convivial setting, which is propitious for discussion to understand the changes, demands, and needs of the export market.
The TV France International team has given Le Rendez-Vous some effective tools, making it an essential event for all those seeking to grow their international presence, especially producers.
The Procirep provides early-stage funding for a large proportion of French TV production, whether fiction, animation, or documentary – even web creation, subject to certain conditions – and is delighted to be a long-standing partner of Le Rendez-Vous, which, as a logical extension of the sector, promotes programming with foreign audiences.
Have a great Rendez-Vous 2018!
President of the Procirep Television Commission
Michel Veunac Mayor of Biarritz
The town of Biarritz has, for several years, positioned itself in the dynamic and oinnovative sector of the moving image, and year upon year, is delighted to welcome back the TV France International Rendez-Vous. Hosting festivals and industry events is key for us, and we aim to host each event in optimum conditions. The Bellevue offers an ideal setting for such gatherings.
Film and TV production projects a powerful image of our country’s culture. The 2018 edition will once again enable French sales companies to showcase recent output to foreign buyers in the convivial atmosphere that is the mark of this event.
I’d like to thank the team behind the TV France International Rendez-Vous for the quality of this gathering and for their continued loyalty, and I hope all participants have a fruitful and agreeable stay in our town.
Mayor of Biarritz
